How to Measure Your Window for Glass Replacement (And Why You Shouldn't DIY It)

One of the most common questions we get is: can I measure my own window and order the glass? The answer is technically yes, but practically no.

Why Precision Matters An

insulated glass unit (IGU) must fit precisely within the window frame — typically ±1/16 inch. Beyond the overall dimensions, a professional measurement captures the overall IGU dimensions to 1/16 inch, total IGU thickness, individual glass pane thickness, spacer bar type and width, any existing coatings (identified by reflection test), safety glass requirements (tempered or laminated — identified by corner marking), and glazing method.

The Common DIY Mistakes Measuring

the frame opening instead of the IGU gives you the wrong number — the IGU is smaller than the frame opening. Missing the total thickness means the unit won't seat properly in the frame. Not identifying tempered glass creates a safety code violation. Consumer-grade glass ordered online is often manufactured to looser tolerances than professional-grade IGUs.

What the Professional Process Looks Like When Apex Windows visits your home, we remove the IGU from the frame (or measure in place if possible), take multiple measurements and cross-check them, identify all specifications including coatings and safety requirements, order a custom-cut unit from our commercial glass supplier, and return to install it — typically within 3–5 business days. The measurement visit is free. Call (214) 263-3008 to schedule yours.
