Dallas-Fort Worth has a rich stock of historic homes — from the craftsman bungalows of Oak Cliff and Lakewood to the Victorian-era homes of McKinney's historic district and the mid-century moderns of University Park. When these homes develop foggy windows, the repair process requires more care than a standard suburban replacement.
The Challenge With Historic Windows Historic
homes often have windows that differ from modern standard sizes. Original double-hung wood windows from the 1920s–1960s may have non-standard glass dimensions that require custom-cut IGUs, divided-light patterns (multiple small panes within a single sash), wavy or textured glass that contributes to the home's character, or single-pane glass that was never designed for IGU replacement.
What Can and Can't Be Repaired If
your historic home was updated with double-pane windows (common in renovations from the 1980s–2000s), the glass units can be replaced just like any modern window. Original single-pane windows cannot be converted to double-pane without replacing the entire sash. Modern simulated divided-light (SDL) IGUs can replicate the appearance of original multi-pane windows while providing double-pane insulation.
Historic District Considerations If your home is in a designated historic district — such as McKinney's historic downtown, Dallas's Munger Place, or Fort Worth's Fairmount neighborhood — any exterior modification including window replacement may require approval from the local historic preservation commission. Apex Windows has experience working with historic DFW homes. We take precise measurements, source custom-cut glass units when needed, and can work with your historic preservation requirements.
