The Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C) Under
current law (as of 2026), homeowners can claim a tax credit of 30% of the cost of qualifying energy efficiency improvements, up to a maximum of $600 per year for windows and skylights. To qualify, replacement windows or glass units must meet ENERGY STAR Most Efficient criteria. For the DFW climate zone (Zone 3), this generally means a U-factor of 0.22 or lower and a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) of 0.25 or lower. Standard clear glass replacement does not qualify. Low-E glass with argon fill typically meets these requirements.
What Doesn't Qualify Standard
clear glass replacement (no Low-E coating), repairs that don't change the glass specification, labor costs (only materials qualify), and windows in rental properties (credit is for primary residences only) do not qualify.
