When replacing a foggy glass unit, you'll encounter choices about glass thickness and type. Most homeowners have never thought about this before — here's what you need to know.

Standard Glass Thickness Options 3mm (1/8

inch) is the thinnest option, used in smaller windows and interior applications — adequate for windows up to about 18 inches wide. 4mm (5/32 inch) is the most common thickness for standard residential windows, suitable for most windows up to 36 inches wide. 6mm (1/4 inch) is used for larger windows, picture windows, and applications requiring greater strength — also standard for tempered safety glass.

When Tempered Glass Is Required Texas

building code requires tempered (safety) glass in windows within 18 inches of the floor, windows adjacent to doors (within 24 inches of the door edge), windows in bathrooms and wet areas, skylights, and large picture windows over a certain size. If your existing window has tempered glass, the replacement must also be tempered. You can identify tempered glass by looking for a small etched or printed mark in one corner of the glass.

Laminated Glass Laminated glass has a plastic interlayer between two panes. It's used for hurricane-resistant windows, skylights (required by code), and windows where security or sound reduction is a concern. It's significantly more expensive and not typically necessary for standard residential replacement in DFW. When Apex Windows assesses your windows, we match the existing specification exactly and can upgrade to Low-E glass at the same time. Call (214) 263-3008 for a free assessment.
