Most homeowners discover foggy windows from the inside. But you can also spot window problems from outside, which is useful when doing a quick property walk-around or checking before a home sale.
What to Look For From Outside On
a cool morning, failed window seals are most visible from outside. The temperature differential between the cold glass and the warmer interior air creates condensation that's often easier to see from the exterior angle, especially on windows that face away from direct sunlight. Best time to check: early morning, before the sun has warmed the glass. Advanced seal failures show white or grayish streaking or spotting between the panes — mineral deposit buildup from repeated moisture cycling. These streaks are permanent and visible from both inside and outside. Look at the reflection of the sky or a tree in your windows. Failed glass units sometimes show a slight distortion or waviness in the reflection caused by the glass panes bowing slightly inward as the internal pressure changes when argon gas escapes. Look at the edges of the glass unit where it meets the frame. A brownish or yellowish discoloration at the perimeter indicates that the sealant material is breaking down — often the first visible sign of an impending seal failure, before fog appears.
Making a Quick Assessment A 10-minute walk around your home on a cool morning can give you a good sense of how many windows need attention. Look at each window from a slight angle — the fog and streaking are often more visible at an angle than straight-on.
